Notes

On the rise: Sick of Sarah

I had an extremely difficult time picking a band this week. It wasn’t because I was out of options, but quite the opposite: I had too many options. I changed my mind over and over again, and made notes to write about the other bands a little later.

I decided on Sick of Sarah after checking my Twitter feed and reading the latest tweet by Jamie Holm, bass player of SOS. It dawned on me that I have been putting these lovely ladies on the back burner for far too long.

I love a good female band. I’m not talking about Spice Girls or Pussy Cat Dolls, but the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile and Hole, among many, many others. Any good riot grrrl band will do. For me, Sick of Sarah runs right up there, and once they garner more recognition, they will be unstoppable. They are classified as indie pop rock, but I can’t help but hear a hint of punk in lead singer Abisha Uhl’s voice.

The quintet hails from Minneapolis, but plans to make the move to Los Angeles in October — without the original drummer, Brooke Svanes, whose ex-girlfriend is the inspiration behind the band’s name. Not to worry, they parted on good terms and SOS has already found a replacement in Jessica Forsythe — to continue the pace for success. They are currently in the process of writing new music for the second album, which will be recorded in May.

The band’s sound is well rounded. While Uhl’s vocals are powerful, she can pull it back and croon a lullaby if needed. The guitars are right on point, giving the songs some nice harmonies. The first track I heard from Sick of Sarah was “Daisies” probably back in 2008, shortly after their first full-length record was released. It’s fun and cute, but right now I prefer “Bittersweet,” which I think shows their progression as a band and gives the listener a taste of what they can look forward to in the future.

Jessie Farmer and Katie Murphy round out the five-piece band. If you are in the Bay Area and would like to check out the band live, they will be at Thee Parkside on April 20. Until then, check them out at www.sickofsarah.com or purchase their music on iTunes.
