Discovering, falling for Miike Snow
Yes, I’m aware that Miike Snow (it’s a band, not one person) has been around for a few years now, and the self-titled debut came out in May 2009, but I’m just now getting around to truly discovering them. You can kick me, I deserve it.
I was slow to the Miike Snow party, and I partly blame their single, “Animal,” for that. I know that I’m more than likely in the minority with this statement, but I am not a fan of that song. And since I didn’t care for the first single, it was hard to get motivated to check out the rest of the album. While most of the people I respect for musical opinions were raving about Miike Snow’s debut album, I was putting them on the backburner. Sure, I made a mental note to check out the entire album before really committing one way or the other on the likeability scale, but then one thing led to another.
Finally, here I am, in 2010, enamored with their sound. And all it took was another single to sell me. A few weekends ago, I was listening to my local radio station (Live 105 ladies and gents) when I heard this really beautiful tune. I had no idea what it was called or who sang it, so I quickly Googled a few key lyrics and discovered it was Miike Snow’s “Silvia.” Immediately, I thought, “OK, so this is why everyone loves them.”
This is definitely an album that ebbs and flows well. It has dance hits, slow jams and that feel-good sound you’ve always wanted to put on when your buddies arrive at your place with beer and fun stories.
If you’ve been a jerk like me, don’t put this one off any longer. It’s worth the buy, any way you get it. And who knows, maybe you’ll like “Animal.”
Other hits: “Burial,” “A Horse Is Not A Home” and “Cult Logic”
