Hanson and A Rocket To The Moon = Amazing.

I went to see A Rocket To The Moon and Hanson last night in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. It was so much fun. My voice is hoarse from all the hootin’ and hollerin’, but I’m loving every bit of my memories from the show.

Let’s just get this out of the way: I am a HUGE Hanson fan. I first heard “MMMBop” in May 1997, while driving in my friend’s car on the way to an A’s game. It was enough to send me into teenage fangirl status. My room was quickly plastered with everything Hanson (something my friends still love to talk about), and I tried to catch them on every TV appearance, which was difficult to do since DVR hadn’t been invented yet (ouch, I feel old).

I’ve seen Hanson several times live, and can ride the high of their show for weeks. They are such incredible musicians, that even the biggest hater on the planet has to give it up for the fact that they write their own music and play with passion. On this particular night, they were on point. They even did my absolute favorite thing: sing a capella. How many bands out there do you know that can do that? Not many, I assure you.

My second-favorite Hanson song, “Madeline” was played sometime during the evening, so I was a happy camper. Of course, they played all the fan favorites from their older albums, which mixed well with the tracks they played from Shout It Out, their album released this year. I have to say that I really enjoyed when they played “Give A Little”, which will be the next single off of that album.

One of the best parts of the show is how involved the fans get. From the singing to the dancing, there is a lot of movement going on. Hanson has a single out right now, “Thinking Bout Somethin’”, that comes with its own dance moves. (You can see the music video here, if you’re curious.) Of course, there were a bunch of people in the back of the venue who were busting those out, which was really cool to see.

Their opening band for this leg was A Rocket To The Moon, a band I’ve been dying to see live, thanks to a high recommendation from The Maine. I have their album, On Your Side, and love “Mr. Right” and “Like We Used To”, both of which I’m sure you’ve probably heard in the background of a show or two.

They were exactly what I expected them to be: fun loving dudes on stage having a good time. Lead singer Nick Santino sings so poignantly, and Justin Richards (who some of you might now from Brighten fame) complements him well with backup vocals. “Baby Blue Eyes” was a really great song to hear live. I also thought it was fun that they included a Ray LaMontagne cover for the set. I got the chance to speak with Justin, drummer Andrew Cook and bass player Eric Halvorsen after the show and bought them drinks for such a great set. It was my way of saying thanks.

I had so much fun, that I changed my mind and plan on going back tomorrow for the second show, even though I have to get up at 6 a.m. the following morning.

Well done, fellas.
